ASSISTANCE
PROGRAM
NOVA received
word in October,
2003 that this
multi-county
project to
provide civil
legal assistance
to victims of
sexual assault
and stalking
will be funded
by the Office on
Violence Against
Women,
Department of
Justice for an
additional two
years. Initially
started in the
fall of 2001,
NOVA and its
three sister
agencies in
Delaware,
Chester and
Montgomery
Counties
partnered to
hire two
attorneys to
provide
representation
to victims in
civil matters,
such as
divorces, child
custody,
visitation and
support matters,
landlord-tenant
issues and
administrative
hearings, when
such legal
assistance was
otherwise
unavailable due
to low income or
other factors.
During the
first grant
period, the
attorneys
provided legal
assistance to
180 victims
in the
four-county area
and formed an
advisory
committee of
legal experts
and others to
help generate
ideas for
outreach and
program
sustainability.
