2007 Galaxy Art Show & Sale

David Hoke’s ‘Inception’ Takes Best in Show

David Hoke’s wood cut reduction, “Inception,” was the judges’ unanimous choice for Best in Show at the 14th Galaxy Show & Sale held October 19-21 at the Bucks County Courthouse, Doylestown, to benefit NOVA.

Judging the entries of 80 artists in four categories were Patricia Goodrich, sculptor and former art teacher; John Mathews, sculptor and Bucks County Community College Assistant Academic Dean for the Arts; and Thomas Sperling, illustrator and co-founder of Mixed Media Gallery in Doylestown.

“What attracts us is that it has both form and movement,” said Goodrich of Hoke’s brilliantly colored wood-cut reduction. “Although it is abstract, you really feel a human connection to it.”

Mathews was impressed by the piece’s “organic nature,” noting that the labor-intensive process as employed by this artist doesn’t come across as a typical woodcut.

Best Oil Painting

The Best Oil Painting honor was presented to Anthony Thompson’s “Dunes.”

Goodrich pointed out that although the work is “precise, it doesn’t feel like a photo—it’s warmer.”

Best Watercolor, Pastel, Acrylic or Gouache

Robert Barrett’s watercolor, “Ferns Along the Trail,” was the winner in the Best Watercolor, Pastel, Acrylic or Gouache category. Sperling admired the “intensity of color,” unusual in a watercolor. Said Mathews: “I’m attracted to it not because it looks like a photograph, but because it’s a surprise” that it isn’t a photo.

Best Work, Other Media

Best Work, Other Media, was awarded to Susan Von Medicus for her icon, “Angel of Blessed Silence,” done in egg tempera and gold leaf on a wood panel.

“We all loved these icons,” said Goodrich. “Icons are often distant, but in this one there is a very human contact in her face.”

Mathews pointed out the entry’s “intricacies, detail in the composition and incorporation of the title into the work.”

The four major awards were donated by Alan Fetterman, Sandra Fickes, Doreen McGettigan and Karen Lasorda. Honorable Mention recognition was presented to three additional pieces in the show in each category.
